Lamination vs. Varnish: Which is Better for Cosmetic Packaging

While the primary cosmetic packaging is generally made of sturdy material, the labels over primary packaging and secondary packaging of cosmetic jars are prone to damage like wear and tear, scratches, dirt, fingerprints, and more. To make the cosmetic labels, boxes, and covers more durable and aesthetic, packaging finishes are used.

It is important to note that the appearance of the cosmetic packaging plays an important role in attracting the consumers. According to the packaging design statistics by Zipdo, 33% of consumers are more likely to try a new product if they are drawn to the packaging.

Furthermore, 63% of consumers say packaging that looks cheap makes them assume the product is of low quality. As packaging finishes instantly improve the appearance of the cosmetic packaging, they also make the products look high-quality. So, the cosmetic industry uses two types of packaging finishes: lamination and varnish.

In this article, we discuss both of these types of packaging finishes to help you select the ideal one for your brand.

What is Lamination?

Lamination is the application of a thin layer of laminate material, which in most cases is clear plastic film, over cosmetic boxes and labels made of paper or cardboard. The main purpose of lamination is to keep the print of the cosmetic packaging intact.

In general, lamination is divided into two categories as explained below,

  • Matte Lamination: Matte lamination is smooth and makes the custom cosmetic packaging appear elegant.
  • Glossy Lamination: Glossy lamination is shiny and has a great visual appeal.

The Lamination Process

Cosmetic packaging lamination is done in the following steps,

  • The cosmetic label or box is printed with the desired design
  • The adhesive material is attached to the plastic film through a roller or a pre-coated film is obtained
  • Laminate material like a thin layer of PP plastic along with an adhesive is applied over the print
  • Once applied, the excess laminate is trimmed to make the label appear symmetrical and smooth

Also, note that there are two methods of applying the laminate; thermal lamination in which heat is used to adhere the laminate, and cold lamination in which laminate is applied to the paper with the help of pressure.

Applications of Lamination

Lamination is useful for following types of product packaging,

  • Products that need protection from external environmental conditions like moisture, UV light, and scratches
  • Product labels that come in contact with liquids like water, chemicals, and oils
  • Containers that require better handling and grip
  • Premium beauty brands

What is Varnish?

Varnish is a clear liquid and varnishing is defined as the process of application of a clear sticky liquid/resin over the cosmetic packaging. This liquid is either solvent, water, or UV-based and is applied through a spray or printing system.

Varnishing is done to seal and preserve the ink of the cosmetic labels. Furthermore, varnishing can also be glossy or matte, just like lamination.

The Varnish Process

Here is how cosmetic packaging varnishing is done,

  • Just like lamination, the label is printed and fully dried before application of a varnish
  • The right type and technique of varnishing for your cosmetic product packaging is chosen
  • Varnish material is applied over the printed paper or cardboard through inline or offline varnishing
  • Lastly, the varnish is allowed to cure under air, heat, or UV light

We mentioned the common procedure of varnishing above. Additionally, below are the types of varnishing,

  • Solvent-based varnishing: Solvents like alcohols and esters are used in solvent-based varnishing. These are combined with a thermoplastic resin.
  • UV-based varnishing: Here, a varnishing oil is used to cover the label, and UV rays initiate a chemical reaction in the varnishing oil. This reaction hardens the varnish and gives the surface a smooth and shiny appearance.
  • Water-based varnishing: In water-based varnishing, water-soluble resins are coated on cosmetic packaging labels.

Applications of Varnish Packaging

Varnish packaging is suitable for,

  • Brands focused on better aesthetics
  • Brands looking for economical surface finishes

The Difference Between Lamination vs. Varnish

While both lamination and varnish enhance the visual appeal and protection of cosmetic labels, the intensity of their effectiveness is different. So, let us discuss the main differences between lamination vs. Varnish.

1. Protection

When it comes to offering protection to the primary cosmetic packaging, its labels, and secondary cosmetic packaging, lamination is the clear winner. This is because of the fact that lamination is done using plastic and plastic is resistant to the effects of,

  • Temperature
  • Moisture
  • Dust
  • Chemicals
  • Water
  • Wear and tear
  • Scratches and abrasions

Moreover, the laminated material layer is also thicker and more durable than that of varnish.

In contrast, varnish offers a temporary seal to the ink of the printing. Although it improves the aesthetic appeal of the artwork done on the packaging, it is vulnerable to all other environmental factors mentioned above. Thus, go for lamination if you want your product packaging to provide a sturdy shield to cosmetics.

2. Aesthetic

The aesthetics and visual appeal of lamination and varnish stand neck to neck. Both come in satin, glossy, and matte finishes that add dimensions, depth, and clarity to the print design of the cosmetic cream jars and labels. Laminate is coated all over the surface of the packaging while varnish might only be placed at specific spots.

Moreover, lamination gives the products a modern, sleek, and high-end finish while varnish appears traditional yet classy. Another major difference between the aesthetics of both finishes is that varnish makes the labels look more premium in quality than they actually are and lamination enhances the quality in addition to the visual appeal of the products.

Thus, depending on your requirements and aesthetics, both materials can serve as a good choice.

3. Cost

If we consider the process and machinery involved in lamination and varnishing, we can determine which of the two is more costly. Considering varnish, all you need is a liquid with resin and it cures quickly as well. Therefore, the varnishing is a low-cost process.

On the other hand, you need a coating of plastic material like PET, PP, or more, a machine to coat the packaging surface, and then a machine to heat or press the coating on the cosmetic labels. From the use of materials to the process of adhering and curing the lamination, it is a costly procedure.

4. Durability

Varnish is just like a layer of paint or resin on the custom cosmetic packaging in contrast to lamination which is a thin film of high-quality plastic. While varnish might protect the print and artwork of cosmetic packaging, it is not durable in the long run. Additionally, it becomes yellow over time and makes the product look cheap. Not to mention that it peels due to heat, water, extreme sunlight, or contact with any liquid.

Lamination is both sturdy and durable. Its quality is not affected by environmental factors or any impact. Therefore, lamination offers more durability as compared to the varnish and works well for brands looking for cosmetic packaging that goes a long way.

5. Eco-Friendly

There is only one major drawback of lamination and it is the fact that lamination is not an environment-friendly option for providing cosmetic packaging surfaces with an ideal finish. First of all, laminate is made out of plastic which does not biodegrade over time. Moreover, you cannot reuse, repurpose, or recycle a laminated beauty packaging label. Thus, it ends up in a landfill.

In contrast, varnish is a sustainable surface finish. It is made of natural materials that do not deplete the earth’s natural resources and neither add to the environmental pollution or landfills. Furthermore, the resin of the varnish can be recycled. Lastly, varnishing does not release any toxic compounds in the environment. This is the reason why eco-friendly brands prefer varnish over lamination.

Why are Packaging Finishes Important for Cosmetics Packaging?

Packaging finishes play an important role in cosmetic packaging and below are the reasons why,

  • Packaging surface finishes instantly improve the appearance of the packaging labels. They brighten up the label, make the print more clear, and enhance the product’s visual appeal.
  • They also protect the surface from impact and environmental factors and allow the products to maintain their quality.
  • Finishes prevent the product packaging designs from smudging, scratches, and wear and tear.

Conclusion: Which is Right for You?

The right surface finishing onoption for your cosmetic brand can be easily determined if you know the desired goals of your brand. For example, lamination works best for beauty brands that require a durable finish, do not mind the use of non-biodegradable material, and have a high budget.

On the other hand, varnish is the surface finish of choice for low-budget and sustainable beauty brands. Also, let us tell you that we provide our clients with different types of surface finishes for their cosmetic brands. So, feel free to contact us.
