Any custom cosmetic jar is incomplete without an aesthetic lid that adds to the visuals of the cosmetic container.
But do not know what makes the jar lid and body compatible?
It is the thread present on the neck of the cosmetic jar.
In this guide, we, VCPAK, will talk about the cosmetic thread sizes and dimensions to help you find the accurate one for your bulk cosmetic jars.
What Is a Cosmetic Jar Thread Size?
Every cosmetic jar has a main body, a neck, and a head or a lid. The neck of the cosmetic jar is the part where the lid is attached. In the cosmetic industry, this neck is also called cosmetic jar thread.
Different types of cosmetic jars have different sizes of neck and this size is called cosmetic jar thread size.
What is a Cosmetic Jar Dimension?
The dimensions of a cosmetic jar are the measurements of the cosmetic jar from different angles. For example, the length, width, and diameter of the cosmetic jars and lids. These dimensions determine how much product you can put in your beauty jar.
Furthermore, the thread of the cosmetic jar is also classified into different dimensions.
These are given as,
- T Dimension: It is the diameter of the outmost threads on both sides of the neck.
- E Dimension: The diameter from the uppermost part of the neck is called the E dimension.
- S Dimension: The area between the uppermost part of the neck and the first thread is S.
- I Dimension: If we measure the diameter of the neck from its inner surface, it is I dimension.
- H Dimension: The whole length of the neck is H dimension.
Why is it Important to Choose the Right Jar Thread and Dimension?
As a beginner, you must think all you have to do is to make the cap of the cosmetic containers that fit the head. So, what is the need to get so into thread sizes and dimensions?
Well, here are a few reasons why choosing the right thread size and dimension is mandatory.
- It allows seamless packaging during display, transport, storage, and usage of the product.
- It provides a well-fitted tight seal to the cosmetic jars.
- The right cosmetic threads add to the packaging experience for the consumers.
- With the right thread, the purpose of the cosmetic is served well as it allows adequate dispensing and less contamination.
How is it Represented?
The size of the neck is determined by two values divided by “-” or “/”. First is a 2-digit number that shows the outer diameter of the thread and the second 3-digit number represents the type of thread used in the custom cosmetic jar.
In the image shared above, the number “20” shows how big is the mouth of the cosmetic jar and the number “400” is a numeric value for thread style.
Thread styles are further classified by the Glass Packaging Institute and Plastic Industry Association.
Common Cosmetic Jar Threads and Finishes
400 is the continuous thread style. It is the most common type of thread style used in glass cosmetic jars. Moreover, here are the common thread sizes and finishes used to make bulk cosmetic jars.
33 – 400
Small cosmetic jars have an outer diameter of “33” in the thread. 33 means the distance from one end of the neck of the jar to the other end is 33 mm. It is used in small cosmetic containers with wide mouths like lip balms.
400 means a single continuous thread style is used. 33-400 is a thread often used with plastic lids and it can hold 0.24 to 1 ounce of the product.
48 – 400
A little larger than 33 – 400, 48 – 400 size cosmetic containers have a diameter of 48 mm in general with a single continuous thread finish of 400. It holds double the amount of contents as that of 33 – 400 and is suitable to be used with plastic lids as well.
53 – 400
For larger plastic lids or metal caps for cosmetic jars of 1 to 2 ounces in size, you need a larger thread size as well. 53 – 400 thread finish comes into play here. This type of thread finish works with plastic, glass, or metal cosmetic bottles with straight sides.
58 – 400
Size upto 2 ounces is considered small or medium depending upon the quantity a cosmetic jar can store. For large-sized cosmetic containers of 4 and seldom 8-ounce jars, thread size of 58-400 is the best choice.
It provides a diameter of 58 mm to the necks of cosmetic bottles with plastic or metal caps.
89 – 400
Cosmetic jars with 89 mm in diameter have quite a big mouth. This big mouth allows packaging of cosmetics like face powders, body lotions, hair masks, and more in quantities ranging from 4 ounces to 30 ounces.
Common Cosmetic Jar Dimensions
The size of the neck or thread of cosmetic jars is manufactured according to the diameter of the body of the container and the amount of contents it can keep. So, here are some of the common cosmetic jar dimensions.
- Extra Small: 5ml -20ml of product is stored in small jars with a thread size of 33-400.
- Small: Small-sized cosmetic bottles have 30ml – 50ml of the product and lids compatible with 48-400 thread sizes.
- Medium: For medium-sized cosmetic containers of 60ml – 120ml, 53-400 thread size works well.
- Large: 58-400 with 120ml – 200ml of the body size are considered as large-sized cosmetic containers.
- X-Large: For cosmetic jars having a size of more than 210ml, 89-400 thread size is suitable.
